The groundbreaking for the long-awaited Macon-Bibb County Senior Citizens Center will be held next week.

The ceremony will take place 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Central City Park site of the center that is being named after Commissioner Elaine Lucas. Warren Associates Inc. is the contractor for the $2.23 million project that is being paid for with special sales tax revenue and money from the sale of the current senior center Adams Street property.

Getting the center built has taken several years as Macon-Bibb officials scouted various sites before Central City Park garnered a consensus among a group of seniors.
