State Sen. David Lucas has been named chairman of a committee tasked with improving rural Georgia.

The political veteran will guide the meetings for the Senate Rural Georgia Study Committee that begin this summer. The committee deals with similar issues as a House Rural Development Council that will create policy ideas on issues such as health care and education in rural communities.

Lucas introduced in March a resolution to start the rural work group. He was appointed chairman this month by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle.

The Macon Democrat says the committee will hold a planning meeting July 7 with the Middle Georgia Regional Commission.

“We need to know all the things they can do as we go through the state and come up with reasonable ways to deal with it in the legislature,” Lucas said.
