Georgia Legal Services honoring Reichert at fundraiser

While Robert Reichert has garnered prominence as a politician in Macon, his older sibling has been a fixture on the city’s legal scene for more than 50 years.

Albert Reichert Jr., brother of the Macon-Bibb County mayor, will be honored Oct. 7 at a fundraiser for the Macon regional office of the Georgia Legal Services Program. The Harvard Law School graduate began practicing law in the early 1960s and is a partner at the law firm Anderson, Walker & Reichert.

The fundraiser is co-sponsored by the Macon Bar Association and Georgia Legal Services, where Reichert has served as president of the state board of directors. The Rotary Club of Macon member was named Lawyer of the Year in 2002 by the Macon Bar Association.

While serving as president of Georgia Legal Service’s board of directors, Reichert visited many of the district offices and helped develop a new strategic plan, said its executive director, Phyllis Holmen.

Reichert has been an invaluable resource for the Legal Service attorneys who work in a stressful and demanding job.

“He was there to have our back and encouraging our staff to do more and thanking them for what they do,” Holmen said.

The Georgia Legal Services Program provides assistance to people who can’t afford an attorney. The Macon office serves about two dozen central Georgia counties. The program focuses on helping children and the elderly, as well as victims of abuse.

“We only handle civil cases. Many involve domestic violence,” Holmen said. “We take clients to court and get protection orders and counsel with them and see if they need other resources to get by.”

It’s fitting that Reichert is being honored next week because he is an exemplary member of the legal profession, said Macon Bar Association President Stuart Walker.

“He’s a model for what all lawyers, especially young lawyers, should aspire to be in terms of professionalism and treating people decently, helping clients and being selfless,” Walker said.

The fundraiser will include a concert by Phyllis & the Platinums, a popular Mercer law student Southern rock roots band. The event will be held at the Cox Capitol Theater in downtown Macon from 7-10 p.m. Tickets are $50/attorney; $10/law school student; $25/friends. Sponsorships are available from $250 to $2,500.
