Shirley Hills Elementary School’s stock market team won the district stock market competition. The team was recognized at an awards reception in Atlanta on May 3. The winning team members are Carl Wilford Jr., Jonah Simpson, Jermon Rountree and Christian Davis, accompanied by adviser Norika Blanton.

The students invested a hypothetical portfolio of $100,000 over 10 weeks. Their simulated portfolio value at the end of the 10-week trading session was $105,779.46.

The Georgia Council on Economic Education hosts the Stock Market Game each year for grades 5 through 12. Economic education is about financial literacy as well as the economic forces that affect everyone's financial circumstances. With equity markets as the model, the game gives Georgia’s teachers a tool to teach students how scarcity, trade, opportunity cost, voluntary exchange, price incentive, specialization, productivity and other economic concepts impact financial institutions.
