MGSU SEEKING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

Two potentially full-ride scholarships to Middle Georgia State University are on the table for well-qualified high school students.

The Middle Georgia State Foundation is seeking applicants for two Presidential Scholarships, which are awarded to graduating high school seniors in the amount of $5,000 per year. Over the course of four years, the award equates to a full academic scholarship of $20,000, enough to cover the majority of expenses of earning a MGSU bachelor's degree.

The scholarships are awarded on top of HOPE Scholarships and any other financial aid students may receive and can be applied toward living expenses and other costs associated with enrollment.

The two available scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic year are the Dr. David A. Bell Presidential Scholarship for the Humanities and the Coca-Cola Presidential Scholarship. The Bell scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman who is a Georgia resident, achieved 1200 or greater on the reading and math portion of the SAT, graduated with a minimum 3.5 high school GPA and plans to pursue a bachelor's degree at MGSU with a major in the humanities, including, but not limited to, English, history, philosophy and the arts. The Coca-Cola scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman who meets the same qualifications and plans to pursue a bachelor's degree at MGSU.

Students throughout the District are given the opportunity to read any book and create an artistic piece reflective of that book. Entries are submitted to the Middle Georgia Regional Libraries for judging.

Winners included Joma Viloria, a Springdale Elementary School first-grader; Maggie Walker, a Vineville Academy of the Arts fifth-grader; Etta James, a Westside High School sophomore; and Isabel Newberry, a Central High School senior. Each winning piece of art and the book that inspired it will be displayed in one of the branches of the Middle Georgia Regional Libraries.
