Education Notebook: Mercer presents business research grants
Mercer University's BB&T Center for Undergraduate Research in Public Policy and Capitalism has announced the recipients of its latest round of grants supporting student research in economics, finance or other related areas.
The center awarded funding to six Mercer undergraduates working on five projects.
Oscar Martinez, a junior economics major, received up to $2,000 for his project, "Contraception and Crime."
Aaron Hinckley, a senior economics major, and Robert Mueller, a junior economics major, received up to $2,000 for their project, "The Black Market for HIV Medication in Georgia."
Maggie Callahan, a junior political science and economics double-major, received up to $2,000 for her project, "The Effects of European Union Membership on Wine Producers in Georgia."
Robert Pedelty, a senior economics and finance double-major, received up to $1,500 for "The Different Economic Paths of Armenia and Moldova."
And Jordin Post, a sophomore economics and finance double-major, received up to $1,000 for "The Stock Market in the U.S. and Frontier Markets."
HOUSTON COUNTY BOE HOLDING PUBLIC HEARING
The Houston County school board will include a public hearing during its monthly work session Monday at 6 p.m. at Feagin Mill Middle School. The purpose of this hearing is to discuss the submission of an Investing in Educational Excellence (IE2)/Strategic Waiver School System Application to the Georgia Department of Education.
HOUSTON NAMES SPEECH WINNERS
Twenty fifth-graders from the Houston County school system's gifted and talented education classes competed in the Elementary School Oratorical Contest on Feb. 4. The topic for this year's competition was "How My Best Brings Out the Best in Others."
The winners for 2015-2016 are Quail Run Elementary's Walker Durham, first place; Russell Elementary's Ashton Harden, second place; and Lake Joy Elementary's Charity Smith, third place.
Cash awards of $25, $15 and $10 were awarded to the first- through third-place winners, who will speak at Tuesday's school board meeting.
GMC CADET MOVES ON TO WEST POINT
Georgia Military College junior college cadet Sawyer Madsen has received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. The official word came from U.S. Rep. Doug Collins, who called Masden with the news late last month. Madsen, from Gainesville, came to GMC for the 2015 fall term via the West Point Scholar Program, which allows aspiring West Point cadets another year of academic preparation prior to attending the academy.
SOCIAL STUDIES FAIR COMING
The Houston County school system will hold its annual Social Studies Fair on Thursday and Friday at the Museum of Aviation in Hangar One. The fair will be open to the public Thursday from 3-5 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Students in fifth through 12th grades may enter. The projects are visual presentations designed to show research and conclusions about the study of people and their relationships to their physical and social environment. Research projects fit one of six disciplines: anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science or sociology/psychology.
The best projects from the system fair will be chosen for entry in the Southwest Georgia Regional Social Studies Fair, which will be held March 12 at Muscogee County's Museum of Art.
FPD ALUM NAMED ENROLLMENT COORDINATOR
Christen McCommon is First Presbyterian Day School's new enrollment coordinator in the FPD Enrollment Office. McCommon is an FPD alumna who graduated magna cum laude from the University of Georgia with a bachelor's degree in public relations. She previously served as the program and events manager at the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research in Atlanta. In her role as enrollment coordinator, McCommon will assist Enrollment Director Cheri Frame in giving tours, welcoming new and prospective families, and supporting the FPD International Program and the daily operations of the department.
