Two Houston BOE members qualify unopposed

There won't be a special election for the Houston County school board in March, after all.

Two board members, Lori Johnson in District 2 and Dave Crockett and District 3, were appointed to fill the seats vacated by Marianne Melnick and Skip Dawkins in September. Those seats were supposed to be up for a special election to fill the unexpired terms on March 1, but Johnson and Crockett were the only candidates who applied for qualification.

Crockett will need to qualify again between March 7 and 11 for the May 24 election, though, along with Rick Unruh in District 1, Helen Hughes in District 5 and Bryan Upshaw in District 7.

The March 1 ballot, along with presidential primaries, will still include a referendum for a 1-cent sales tax to fund projects at Houston County schools.
