Macon Charter 'not going anywhere,' board member says
The Bibb County school board's decision to deny Macon Charter Academy's request to amend its charter does not mean an end to the school, a representative of the academy's governing board said Friday.
Joseph Brothers, the MCA board's vice president, said the move provided MCA with the opportunity to evaluate other options besides a contract with Renaissance School Services. The board met behind closed doors for several hours Thursday night.
"Macon Charter is not going anywhere," he said Friday.
The amendment was requested because the academy's charter, as written, does not allow for a contract with an educational service provider such as Renaissance.
Brothers said the current MCA board, which also includes President Ed Grant, Daisy Ross, Linda Smith, John Carey, Wade Scott and Thomas Duval, would continue to work toward governance and leadership goals set forth by the Bibb County school board and the state Department of Education.
The school has been on state-initiated probation, partially because of governance issues, since September.
