Education notebook: State department hosting nutrition campaign contest

The Georgia Department of Education's school nutrition program is holding a student contest to help promote the 2016 Summer Meals Program. The goal is to build awareness of the program and give students the chance to supplement their portfolio in marketing, writing, photography, graphic design and other disciplines.

Groups such as classes or clubs are encouraged to help create a campaign concept that will ultimately include logo design, marketing strategies, program awareness, and a student engagement strategy for the program. Entrants can submit full campaigns, a single campaign element or several campaign elements. More information, including the contest rules and an entry form, is available at SummerMeals.GaDOE.org. The deadline for submission is Feb. 14.

HOUSTON COUNTY HOSTING SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR

The Houston Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be held Tuesday through Friday at the Robins Air Force Base Museum of Aviation in the Century of Flight Hangar. An awards ceremony will be held Friday at 6:30 p.m. More than 500 middle and high school students from Houston County and Peach County public and private schools will compete.

Students will set up their display boards on Tuesday from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Judges will interview participants on Wednesday, and the fair is open to the public on Friday from noon to 3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

MERCER HOSTING LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Mercer University will host its inaugural Service Leadership Conference on Saturday, beginning at 9:30 a.m., on the Macon campus. The event will feature presentations by undergraduate and medical students exhibiting their commitment to community engagement.

More than 20 projects, many of which were implemented through the School of Medicine's Distinction in Service to the Community (DISC) program, will be represented.

The program seeks to address various health, educational and socioeconomic disparities in Macon, Savannah and Columbus, Mercer's three medical school locations.

FEAGIN MILL RECEIVES LIGHTHOUSE AWARD

Feagin Mill Middle School has been selected as a 2016 Lighthouse School to Watch by the Georgia Lighthouse School to Watch program. This program identifies high-performing middle schools in the state. Feagin Mill is one of just 18 schools in Georgia to be awarded the honor.

Lighthouse schools serve as models and mentors for other schools. Georgia is one of three states qualified to be a part of the National Forum Schools to Watch program. High-performing schools committed to excellence are identified based on four areas: Academic Excellence, Developmental Responsiveness, Social Equity and Organizational Structures and Processes.

GEORGIA COLLEGE PROGRAMS HONORED IN REPORT

U.S. News & World Report released its 2016 Best Online Programs rankings, and several Georgia College programs made the list.

Jumping 10 spots from last year, the Georgia College online graduate nursing programs were ranked eighth in the country -- tied with the University of Cincinnati. Georgia College's online graduate nursing programs were the highest ranking in the state.

The online Master of Business Administration (Georgia WebMBA® at Georgia College) was also recognized as the highest-ranking state university, ranking 22nd nationally and tied with four other universities.

The online graduate business programs at Georgia College, excluding the MBA, were listed as the 33rd, tied with several other schools including Georgia Southern University. U.S. News & World Report also recognized the online bachelor's degree offerings at Georgia College, ranking them 49th best in the nation and tied with several other schools.

EAGLE SPRINGS EARNS STEM CERTIFICATION

Eagle Springs Elementary School has been awarded Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics certification by the Georgia Department of Education. Eagle Springs Elementary is the second school in Middle Georgia and only the 15th elementary school in the state to earn the designation.
