Education Notebook: Macon Charter names board officers

At a called meeting Dec. 29, the governing board for Macon Charter Academy appointed members to standing committees and named interim officers.

The officers will serve terms not to exceed 90 days because the board expects to name more board members in the coming weeks.

Ed Grant will continue to serve as the board's chairman, Joseph Brothers will serve as vice chairman and treasurer and Daisy Ross will serve as secretary.

MERCER RANKED NO. 2 IN REGION

The online publication College Choice ranked Mercer University No. 2 in its most recent list of Southern Regional Universities. The ranking is based on academic reputation, financial considerations and graduates' career opportunities.

The explanation of Mercer's ranking also cited the university's degree offerings and heritage as components of the decision.

"While no longer affiliated with the Baptist denomination, Mercer is committed to high quality academics that affirm the values of the Judeo-Christian understanding of the world," according to the report.

Mercer ranked behind only Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. Georgia College and State University (No. 27), Brenau University (No. 30) and Southern Polytechnic State University (No. 47) also made the list from Georgia.

MIDDLE GEORGIA STUDENTS SET TO RETURN TO CLASS

Classrooms in Middle Georgia schools will begin refilling as early as Tuesday, when Bibb and Crawford county public schools begin the second semester, along with Central Georgia Technical College. Houston, Peach, Monroe and Jones counties all start Wednesday, and Twiggs County students return Jan. 18.

Mercer University, Georgia College and State University, Wesleyan College, Fort Valley State University and Middle Georgia State University all start classes on Jan. 11.

SCHOOL BOARDS MEET FOR FIRST TIME IN 2016

The Peach County Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the district offices.

The Jones County school board will meet for its work session Thursday at 5 p.m. at the district's professional learning building.
