Education Notebook: Houston teacher named to national theater board
Northside High school drama teacher Richard Frazier has accepted an appointment to the Educational Theatre Association Board of Directors. His term on the board will run until July 31, 2017.
A 2011 graduate of Columbus State University, Frazier is in his fifth year of teaching at Northside. He was named Northside's Teacher of the Year and Columbus State's Outstanding Alumnus in 2014. He has been active in Georgia Thespians since his induction into Troupe 3414 at Rockdale County High School in Conyers in 2003. He co-directs Thespian Troupe 2982 at Northside, is conference coordinator for the Georgia Junior Thespian Conference and is a member of the Georgia State Chapter Board.
He was the choreographer for two Georgia All State Shows ("Aida," 2012, and "In the Heights," 2014) that were presented on both the Georgia State Thespian Festival and the International Thespian Festival main stages.
APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE FOR BIBB MAGNET HIGH SCHOOLS
Applications for most high school magnet programs in the Bibb County school district are now available. The district will host a Magnet School Fair on Jan. 13 from 5-7 p.m. to highlight the 21st century programs offered at each magnet high school. The fair will be held at Westside High School, 2851 Heath Road. Parents and students are invited to attend and learn more about each school.
High school programs include Central High School's IB Program, the Central High School Fine Arts Magnet, Hutchings College and Career Academy, Northeast Health Science Magnet, Southwest Law Academy and Westside Pre-Engineering Magnet. Applications may be picked up at each high school or found on each high school's Web page. Separate applications must be submitted to each school that a student is applying to attend.
MERCER INNOVATION CENTER HOSTING PITCH CONTEST
The Mercer Innovation Center is looking for aspiring entrepreneurs with The Next Big Idea and will award $9,000 in prizes to students with the best business pitches this April.
The Next Big Idea competition is open to Mercer undergraduate students, who may enter as individuals or teams of up to five people.
Each individual or team may submit one idea, and each individual may participate on only one team.
Entrants are encouraged to seek the involvement of faculty, alumni, staff, fellow students and members of the local business community to provide feedback on the idea.
Students may register by submitting their names and business ideas from Jan. 11-29.
Briana Stenard, assistant professor of management and entrepreneurship in Mercer's Stetson School of Business and Economics, will lead information sessions on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. and Jan. 20 at 10 a.m. in the Mercer Innovation Center.
MGSU PART OF CYBERSECURITY CONTEST
Middle Georgia State University's Center for Cybersecurity Education and Applied Research is one of the academic partners launching this year's Black T-Shirt Cyber Forensics Challenge.
The Black T-Shirt Cyber Forensics Challenge is an annual contest designed to address a variety of elements important in conducting today's digital forensics examinations, incident responses and intrusion analyses. Anyone may participate as an individual or as part of a team of up to three members.
The challenge will award cash prizes up to $250, as well as Amazon Web Services gift certificates and the black T-shirts. Each challenge, designed by one or more of the academic and corporate partners, varies in degree of difficulty.
Registration for the challenge begins Jan. 1. Contest entries are to be submitted by April 1, and results should be announced during the first week of May. The registration site is cyberforensicschallenge.com/registration.
