Education Notebook: Macon native and Mercer student headed to Qatar

Mercer University junior Alayna Williams, a Central High Schoool graduate, was one of 10 students from American universities who visited Doha, Qatar, Nov. 27-Dec. 4, as part of an exchange and fellowship program offered by the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations. The Qatar Study Visit Exchange and Malone Fellowship, led by NCUSAR in cooperation with the Embassy of Qatar to the United States, provides U.S. students and professors with firsthand exposure to the nation. Williams is majoring in both international affairs and Spanish and minoring in women's and gender studies in Mercer's College of Liberal Arts.

HOUSTON SCHOOLS PRESENTING 'CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS'

The Perry High School Theatre for the Performing Arts will present "A Charlie Brown Christmas" at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Perry High School Theater. Tickets are $3 at the door. All proceeds will be donated to local charities in Perry to benefit families in need during the holiday season.

Veterans High School's drama program will perform the same play at 3:30 p.m. Saturday with tickets costing $5.

LOST KEYS LITERARY FEST SEEKING BOOKS

The Lost Keys Literary Festival wants to spread the gift of literacy with a book drive through Dec. 18.

Donated books will be given to children through the Rainbow House and the Safe House. The reading material should be appropriate for K-12 students. This is an inaugural book drive, with the goal to become a holiday tradition.

Drop-off locations include the Macon Arts Alliance, Kudzu Co. on Second Street, Changes Hair Salon and Wesleyan College. For those who are unable to make it to these locations, the Lost Keys Literary Festival may be able to pick up donations.

SCHOLARSHIP EXPANDS IN MIDDLE GEORGIA

The Charles Johnson Foundation is poised to make an even bigger impact in Middle Georgia by expanding its college scholarship program for 2016. The foundation has awarded two $20,000 scholarships to Hawkinsville High School students each year since 2012, and will now expand to two additional scholarships between Bleckley County and Wilcox County High Schools.

Scholarships to Hawkinsville High School will continue to be awarded to one male and one female senior student-athlete. Two additional scholarships will be awarded between Bleckley County and Wilcox County High Schools to one male and one female senior student-athlete. CGTC HONORS STUDENT FOR GOAL PROGRAM

Terri DeLong, a radiologic technology student, was named Central Georgia Technical College's Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership winner. DeLong will now move on to the region and state GOAL competitions.

The GOAL award is the highest honor a student can receive within the Technical College System of Georgia. Each local college selects a winner to compete with others from around the state for the ultimate title of state GOAL winner. The state winner serves as an ambassador for technical education across Georgia for a year. The winner also receives the grand prize of the GOAL medallion and a new automobile.

HOUSTON SCHOOL HONORED FOR STEM EFFORTS

Thomson Middle School is one of five state finalists for the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, a nationwide competition to increase interest in science, technology, engineering and math. The contest challenges teachers and students to take topics out of traditional classroom settings and into local communities. Thomson Middle will receive two Samsung Galaxy Tabs and the chance to win additional prizes.
