A Fort Valley State University freshman died from complications of sickle cell disease Tuesday.

Folkston native Crishea Cummings, 18, was taken to Houston County Medical Center by ambulance Sunday, when she became sick and complained of hip pain.

"We extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends and fellow students as well as the faculty and staff who knew her," interim university President Jessica Bailey said in a release. "Her passing is a loss for the entire Wildcat family."

No funeral details were available Tuesday evening. Grief counseling was made available to the campus community through the Office of Student Health and Counseling Services.
