EDUCATION NOTEBOOK: Mercer hosting history lecture

Mercer University's McDonald Center for America's Founding Principles will welcome historian, biographer and journalist Richard Brookhiser for a public lecture Wednesday.

Brookhiser's talk is titled "Founders' Son: Abraham Lincoln and the American Founding" and will take place at 6 p.m. in the President's Dining Room inside the University Center on the Macon campus.

Brookhiser is a popular historian of the founding period, having written a series of biographies on America's founders, including James Madison, Gouverneur Morris, Alexander Hamilton and George Washington. His most recent book is on Abraham Lincoln's relationship to the founding generation. He also serves as a columnist for American History.

GEORGIA COLLEGE HOSTING 'PROJECT STAND DOWN' EVENT

Georgia College students are hosting a service event, Project Stand Down, for the at-risk working poor, precariously housed and literally homeless in the Milledgeville area.

The event is in partnership with the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary and will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Georgia National Guard Armory, 107 Ga. 15, Milledgeville.

The goal is to bring multiple resources to one location for those in need.

HOUSTON COUNTY SCHOOLS HONORED FOR ONE-ACT

Northside High School's production of "Hairspray" won the 2015 AAAAA region one act play championship.

Northside's Daniel Walker also won the award for best actor, and Tyler Staten, Kensly Gasbarro and Zhane Fuller were named to the all-star cast.

Northside will compete at the GHSA state one act play competition at 5 p.m. Nov. 7 at Perry High School. An encore performance for the public will be presented at 3 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Ray Horne Theatre for Performing Arts. Admission is $5.

Northside was not the only local school to win awards at the region competition.

Warner Robins High placed third for its production of "The Drowsy Chaperone." Five students -- Chelsea Clark, Gideon Strickland, Samuel Copeland, Jordan Engen and Logan Fujimoto -- were also selected for the all-star cast.

In addition, Houston County High's drama cast and crew won fourth in this region for "Ghost the Musical." Winning all-star cast were Jaime Hall and Nijia Pinkney, and Lillie Claire Beck won the award for best actress out of all nine schools.

HOUSTON COUNTY PR DEPARTMENT WINS AWARD

The Georgia School Public Relations Association honored the Houston County Board of Education Community Relations Department with five state awards at its annual conference. Houston County brought home two gold and two silver publication awards. In addition, Beth McLaughlin, director of community and school affairs, was presented an individual professional award.

MERCER PROFESSOR NAMED ORGANIZATION OFFICER

Mercer University professor David Gushee was elected vice president of the American Academy of Religion Board of Directors on Thursday. The AAR is the world's largest professional association of scholars who study religion, with 9,000 members representing some 900 colleges, universities, seminaries and schools in North America and abroad.

GEORGIA COLLEGE EARNS HONOR FOR BIKE-FRIENDLY CAMPUS

The League of American Bicyclists recognized Georgia College with a Bronze Bicycle Friendly University award Thursday.

With the announcement of 49 new and renewing BFUs from 31 states, Georgia College joins a cutting-edge group of colleges and universities across the U.S. transforming their campuses and the communities around them. There are now 127 BFUs in 42 states and Washington, D.C.

PARENT ENGAGEMENT MONTH

November is Parent Engagement Month in Georgia, and districts and schools across the state will be highlighting the role parents play in their children's education.

In addition, Nov. 19 is National Parent Involvement Day, a time for all schools and parents to reflect on the vital partnership needed between them for Georgia's students and schools to be successful.
