Education Notebook: Flint Energies launches scholarship program

Students living in the 17-county area served by Flint Energies will have an opportunity to help pay for school with the launch of a new scholarship program through the company's nonprofit foundation.

About $80,000 in scholarship money will be awarded in May to 32 students who either attend or will attend a college or a technical college General Education Diploma program, according to a news release. The money comes from unclaimed capital credits.

Applications are available on the company's website. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2016.

RETIRED HOUSTON COUNTY EMPLOYEE HONORED BY BAR ASSOCIATION

The Houston County Board of Education's former K-12 social studies and media services coordinator, Pam Knauer, was presented the Houston County Bar Association's Liberty Bell Award on Sept. 29.

This award recognizes outstanding service in promoting a better understanding of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and encouraging greater respect for law and the courts.

TWO MGSU EMPLOYEES RECEIVE STATE AWARDS

Melinda Rodgers and the Middle Georgia State University Enrollment Call Center team received a silver award for service excellence from University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby. Their recognition is in the category of front desk/help center service excellence.

Another MGSU employee, residence life coordinator Eyvonne Tapper, earned honorable mention in the individual of the year category of the annual awards program.

MGSU TO HOST MODEL AFRICAN UNION

The 19th annual Southeast Model African Union Conference will take place Nov. 5-7 on the Macon campus of Middle Georgia State University. About 250 students are expected to attend. The conference will officially convene at 11 a.m. Nov. 5 in the banquet hall of the Professional Sciences and Conference Center.

Jeremiah Sulunteh, Liberian ambassador to the U.S., will be the guest speaker.

MERCER COUNSELING PROGRAM RECEIVES GRANT

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Penfield College of Mercer University a $956,956 grant to support its master of science degree program in clinical rehabilitation counseling on the Cecil B. Day Graduate and Professional Campus in Atlanta.

The five-year Rehabilitation Services Administration grant will support scholarships for students recruited for Mercer's CLRC program. Penfield College will recruit and train these RSA Scholars and work with the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency to employ them to address personnel shortages in the state.

CUMMINGS NAMED MERCER'S ENTREPRENEUR-IN-RESIDENCE

Mercer University's Stetson School of Business and Economics has named Atlanta Tech Village founder David Cummings as its entrepreneur-in-residence on the Cecil B. Day Graduate and Professional Campus in Atlanta. An entrepreneur for more than 15 years, Cummings is CEO of Atlanta Ventures and launched Atlanta Tech Village, the largest technology entrepreneur center in the Southeast, in 2013.

SSBE's entrepreneur-in-residence is a one-year faculty appointment. Responsibilities include speaking to and coaching aspiring entrepreneurs from around the University, and helping to develop new learning experiences that prepare students for start-ups.
