Education Notebook: Perry High School hosting college fair
Perry High School will host its annual PROBE College Fair on Monday from 9-11 a.m. in the gymnasium. About 70 colleges will be on Perry High's campus to speak with parents and students. Any interested Houston County seniors and parents are invited to attend.
WRHS HOSTING BAND COMPETITION
Warner Robins High School's 18th annual Heart of Georgia Marching Band Invitational will be held Saturday at McConnell-Talbert Stadium. One of the premier marching contests in Georgia, Warner Robins High will host 24 bands from across the state.
Gates open at 10 a.m. with performances lasting until the awards ceremonies at 9:30 p.m.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.
Middle school band students who wear their school band shirts are admitted free of charge.
FVSU PROGRAM GETS NATIONAL GRANT
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Division awarded Fort Valley State University's Teaching Everyone about the Risks: Community Coalition program a $900,000 grant. The grant will be used to reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases and substance abuse within the 18-24-year-old minority population. This is the second time that FVSU's TEARS2c program has received a SAMHSA grant.
MERCER BUSINESS SCHOOL HONORED BY PRINCETON REVIEW
Mercer University's Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics is among the pages of "The Best 295 Business Schools" guidebook, released by The Princeton Review on Tuesday.
The Princeton Review does not rank the 295 institutions hierarchically. Instead, rankings are published in 11 categories. For the second consecutive year, SSBE is ranked No. 5 in the Greatest Opportunity for Minority Students category.
MIDDLE GEORGIA STATE HOSTS 2015 HEART WALK
Middle Georgia State University is the host and a sponsor of the 2015 Central Georgia Heart Walk to raise funds for the American Heart Association.
The 5K Heart Walk and preliminary activities begin at 8 a.m. Oct. 24 at the Student Life Center on MGSU's Macon campus.
About 1,200 people are expected to participate in the event.
There are no entry fees. Walkers are eligible to receive a Heart Walk T-shirt once they have raised a minimum of $100.
MONSANTO AWARDS FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT $10,000 SCHOLARSHIP
Madalyn Bryant, a Fort Valley State University senior plant science biotechnology major, is one of 10 recipients of the Monsanto Fund 1890s Student Scholarship for 2015.
Monsanto awards this scholarship with the goal of developing and supporting students pursuing agriculture and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) degrees.
The corporation invests in students majoring in these disciplines to help tackle global food security challenges.
"I am proud of Ms. Bryant's accomplishment and thank Monsanto for recognizing high-achieving students majoring in STEM disciplines," said Govind Kannan, dean of FVSU's College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology.
GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION RECOGNIZES ELAM ALEXANDER ACADEMY
Elam Alexander Academy's Burke campus and northeast campus were recognized for their positive behavioral interventions and supports efforts by the Georgia Department of Education. The department recognizes schools for supporting positive school climate through the implementation of PBIS framework.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DISCUSSION
Middle Georgia State University's Black Student Unification group is sponsoring a panel discussion about domestic violence at 11 a.m. Oct. 21 in the Arts Complex Theater on the Macon campus. This event is free and open to the public.
The event will focus on available resources to prevent domestic violence and help victims. Panelists will include the university's police chief, a crisis center representative and faculty members in sociology and psychology.
