Middle GA schools closing, starting late due to threat of severe weather. See list

Ahead of possible severe thunderstorms and freezing temperatures expected overnight and into Monday, several Middle Georgia school districts have announced changes to school operations.

With a strong line of storms with gusty winds expected to move into Middle Georgia on Monday morning, some school officials have canceled classes or shifted to virtual learning, while others will delay the start of the school day.

“Severe weather is expected to begin in Central Georgia on Monday morning after 2 a.m., with the potential for the strongest storms during the Monday morning commute between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.,” according to the National Weather Service.

Possible impacts include tornadoes, heavy rain, hail, localized flooding and damaging wind gusts exceeding 25 mph, the National Weather Service said.

Colder temperature will follow as the storms move through, the agency added.

“Wind chills could drop below freezing Monday night into Tuesday morning, with lows in the 20s to low 30s,” NWS said. “The below freezing wind chill will return Wednesday morning.”

Here is a list of Middle Georgia schools and universities that have changed their schedules for Monday, March 16, 2026.

  • The Bibb County School District will move to an asynchronous day. All athletic events are canceled.
  • The Houston County School District will be closed.
  • Jones County Schools will be closed. Athletic and extracurricular activities are canceled.
  • Twiggs County Public Schools will move to an asynchronous day.
  • Peach County Schools will be closed. All after-school activities are canceled.
  • The Baldwin County School District will move to a remote learning day.
  • Monroe County Schools will operate on a delayed schedule. All schools will begin at 10 a.m. Buses will be on a two-hour delay.
  • Crawford County Schools and district office will be closed. Regular school activities will resume Tuesday.
  • The Academy for Classical Education will operate on a delayed schedule. The school will begin at 10 a.m.
  • The Cirrus Academy Charter School will operate on a delayed schedule. The school will begin at 9 a.m.
  • Wesleyan College will operate on a delayed schedule. Classes will begin at 10 a.m. All 9 a.m. classes are canceled.
  • Central Georgia Technical College will move to virtual learning. Faculty and staff will work remotely.
  • Georgia College and & State University will delay classes until 10 a.m.
  • Middle Georgia State University will delay classes until 10 a.m.
