Twiggs County Schools begin leadership transition as superintendent retires
Twiggs County Public Schools Superintendent Mack Bullard will soon step down from his leadership role, with a temporary successor already named, the district announced Friday afternoon on social media.
Bullard, who has led the district since 2021, is retiring after nearly five years in the role.
The district’s online post highlighted Bullard’s 33 years of service in education.
“During his tenure, Dr. Bullard didn’t just lead our district; he transformed it,” the post reads. “From improving teacher retention to creating partnerships to expand student learning opportunities, his vision has always been centered on student exposure and preparation for success.”
The post cited districtwide achievements under Bullard’s leadership, including rising graduation rates and expanded educational programs with Central Georgia Technical College and the Hutchings Career Academy in Macon.
Prior to becoming superintendent, Bullard previously served as assistant superintendent of human resources for the Bibb County School District and assistant professor of educational leadership and instruction at the University of West Georgia.
Bullard and additional school leaders did not respond to further requests for comment on his retirement.
While the district searches for a permanent leader, Tyrone Bacon will serve as interim superintendent over the school system during this transition period, the district shared online Friday.
“This is a transition to a transition—a time to steady the foundation, recognize our strengths, and prepare thoughtfully for what comes next,” Bacon said in a statement. “While we have faced challenges, I am encouraged by the resilience, dedication, and heart that our staff continue to show every day on behalf of our students. That commitment is the true strength of Twiggs County.”
Bacon said his role during this period is to support the district, bring clarity where it is needed and help create the conditions for success going forward.
“By working together with purpose and optimism, we will emerge from this period stronger and well-positioned for the future,” he said.
