Shell casings found in Twiggs County student’s car, prompting lock down, officials say
The Twiggs County School District briefly went on lock down Tuesday after ammunition was found in a student’s car.
Jeffersonville law enforcement found shell casings inside a student’s car on campus during a routine security check, prompting a school lockdown, according to a press release Tuesday.
Authorities confiscated the casings, but no firearms were found in the vehicle or on school grounds.
The student was immediately contacted by school administration and escorted to the main office, the district said in a news release.
“Following protocol, the superintendent, campus police and school administration, responded swiftly and effectively to the situation, demonstrating great composure and dedication to safety,” the district said. “In line with the Student Code of Conduct and the Official Code of Georgia, the student’s parent was promptly notified, and appropriate disciplinary actions have been taken.”
The incident came hours after the school district announced being made aware of a social media post about a student’s parent allegedly planning to commit a school shooting in the area.
The district said its quick response played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of all students and the school’s surrounding areas.
Students and staff resumed classroom learning in less than an hour, according to the district.
The district’s “Code Yellow” was lifted, but all after-school activities for Tuesday were postponed, school officials said.
There have been a flood of internet threats in Georgia after a school shooting in Barrow County, which killed four people and injured numerous others.
