Mercer University is kicking off its 191st academic year with a new opening day fall enrollment record, the school announced Monday.

The current number of 9,082 students is 1.5% higher than last fall’s enrollment number, with key contributors to the growth coming from increases in the university’s law and medical schools, university officials said in a press release.

“The University’s record enrollment this fall is a team effort led by professional staff who believe in forwarding Mercer’s mission through the remarkable students who choose to join an environment of academically talented and service-minded Mercerians,” Mercer President William D. Underwood said in the release.

Enrollment growth also came from the university’s graduate programs in education.

Mercer’s opening days were Aug. 16 and Aug. 17, in which it welcomed nearly 1,000 new students, including incoming freshmen and more than 100 transfer students.

The first day of class for students was Aug. 20.

Final fall enrollment figures will be released in early November after all programs complete registration. The university projects that the numbers will increase from opening day.
