Georgia Milestones 2023-2024 test scores are out. How central Georgia schools performed

Georgia school officials announced Friday that students’ statewide test scores showed an increase in classroom knowledge since the COVID-19 outbreak.

At the state level, 67.1% of students are reading at their grade levels or above. While some school districts in Middle Georgia exceeded state numbers, others saw progress and are striving to sustain it.

“I am excited to kick off our new school year with this evidence of positive momentum,” Bibb County School District Superintendent Dan Sims in a news release Friday. “While there is still work to be done, I have seen firsthand how dedicated our educators are, and I know we will continue to be successful in closing the gaps with the state.”

The Georgia Milestones Assessment System measures students’ skills and understanding of state-adopted content standards in English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s website.

Students are assessed in four levels of achievement: beginning learners, developing learners, proficient learners and distinguished learners.

The Middle Georgia Regional Education Service Agency consists of eight school districts. Here’s a breakdown of how students in the region did on Georgia Milestones assessments during the 2023-2024 school year.

Georgia:

• 67.1% of students read at grade level or above
• 74.9% developing or higher in American Literature
• 72.1% developing or higher in biology
• 72.9% developing or higher in U.S. American History

Bibb County:

• 45.2% of students read at grade level or above

• 53.2% developing or higher in American Literature

• 45% developing or higher in biology

• 45.5% in U.S. American History

Crawford County:

• 43.5% of students read at grade level or above

• 65.2% developing or higher in American Literature

• 59.5% developing or higher in biology

• 51% developing or higher in U.S. American History

Jasper County:

• 53.8% of students read at grade level or above
• 66.7% developing or higher in American Literature
• 63.2% developing or higher in biology
• 77.7% developing or higher in U.S. American History

Jones County:

• 72.4% of students read at grade level or above

• 83% developing or higher in American Literature

• 78.1% developing or higher in biology

• 79.7% developing or higher in U.S. American History

Houston County:

• 70% of students read at grade level or above

• 78.5% developing or higher in American Literature

• 75.5% developing or higher in biology

• 58.9% developing or higher in U.S. American History

Monroe County:

• 75.7% of students read at grade level or above

• 82.4% developing or higher in American Literature

• 86.6% developing or higher in biology

• 82.6% developing or higher in U.S. American History

Peach County:

• 54.1% of students read at grade level or above

• 61% developing or higher in American Literature

• 48.6% developing or higher in biology

• 58% developing or higher in U.S. American History

Twiggs County:

• 25% of students read at grade level or above

• 27.5% developing or higher in American Literature

• 28.4% developing or higher in biology

• 32% developing or higher in U.S. American History
