Monroe FFA teams win state, national awards
Monroe County’s Future Farmers of America clubs have been racking up awards this fall.
At Mary Persons High School, the nursery landscaping team placed 14th at the National FFA competition. Team members included Elizabeth Smith, Emsley Smith, Kayley Dale and Audrey Barr.
Mary Persons graduate Tia Chastain was presented with the American Degree, given to members showing the highest level of commitment to FFA, during the national convention.
After qualifying at the regional contest, Mary Persons’ FFA members Tyler Faulk, Matt Fields, Ashton Hooks and Cody Sizemore won the state FFA Land Judging Competition in the senior division. They will be invited to compete in the national contest in May. Mary Persons’ junior team — Tyannah Ogletree, Anna Grace Simmons and Deanna Stokes — placed third in the junior division.
At the same state event, Monroe County Middle School team members Cameron Sparks, Alex Soule and Willow Waldrep won the junior division. Waldrep won the high individual award, Sparks the second high individual, and Deanna Stokes and Anna Grace Simmons tied for third place.
