Wesleyan student lost $400; video may crack case
A student from China who attends Macon’s Wesleyan College went to the UPS Store on Zebulon Road a few weeks ago to inquire about shipping her luggage home. It turned out to be cheaper to check the luggage on an airline, so she headed back to campus. A little while later she realized she’d left her cellphone and wallet at the store. Back at the store, someone handed the student her left-behind belongings in bag and the student went on her way. But later, back at school, the student, according to a Bibb County sheriff’s report of the May 10 episode, “realized that there was only $12 in the wallet and that $400 was missing.” The student informed campus police, and the school’s police chief went to the store the next day. The chief, along with a manager there, watched surveillance footage for the times the student was there. According to the sheriff’s report, a UPS clerk could be seen finding the mislaid items. The clerk, the report went on, “placed the cellphone into a white bag and then looked into the wallet.” After that, the report said, the clerk tossed the wallet into a box and then, several minutes later, returned to the box and “removed what appeared to be the wallet” and put it in a pocket and left the store “for several minutes.” When the student returned, she was handed the bag with her phone and wallet inside. After viewing the security video, the manager confronted the clerk, who denied taking the cash, the report noted. It wasn’t clear whether the clerk was charged, but the report said there was “sufficient probable cause” for a warrant.
