Georgia man pays $16K for boat in Craigslist deal that turns out to be ‘mirage’
The name of the boat for sale on the internet, its model name, might well in hindsight have served as a warning: buyer beware. In early May, a man in Monroe County told sheriff’s deputies there that he had gone on the internet marketplace Craigslist and seen a pontoon boat that he liked.
The boat, a 2017 Sylvan Mirage, was listed for sale in Miami. The man, 62, informed the deputies that he sent a cashier’s check for $16,500 to buy the boat and that he was sent an invoice saying the boat would be delivered in a few days.
“He has not heard anything since,” an incident report noted, “and when he tries to call the (seller’s) phone number it is disconnected.”
The man said his bank told him that his check had been cashed. He told the cops he has contacted an attorney.
Dispatches: On May 28, a 30-year-old Monroe County man showed up in the lobby of the sheriff’s office there to report, as a deputy’s write-up put it, “a domestic issue.” The man said his wife, 27, had during an apparent argument “pushed a ladder over while he was on it, causing deep-tissue bruising on his backside.” . . . There was an “animal complaint” reported to Monroe sheriff’s deputies the next day at a house on Fairway Run off Johnstonville Road at the northern end of the county. A woman there said her daughter, whose age wasn’t noted, “was almost attacked by two aggressive dogs” that had killed a neighbor’s cat. “The dogs were growling, barking and snarling,” the sheriff’s report noted. The cat’s owner was said to have been “very upset” as the cat had been in his family for 16 years. The dog’s owners were cited for violating the county’s leash law.
