Stolen trailer found wrecked about 2 miles from Macon construction site
A thief hauling a construction trailer drove less than 2 miles on Rivoli Drive before wrecking.
At about 7 a.m. Friday, a Bibb County sheriff’s deputy noticed the box trailer that snapped a utility pole after going over the guard rail on Rivoli across from Wesleyan Drive.
Contractor Joey Bellew, who is building a house on Rivoli about 2 miles from the wreck, got an early morning knock on his door.
“A police officer woke me up this morning at my house saying that I had a trailer that was in the road,” Bellew said. “I got dressed and come over and somebody had tried to steal it off the job site.”
Traffic was rerouted for a short time at the juncture of Wesleyan and Rivoli drives as the trailer was hoisted onto a wrecker.
Bellew said he had been hauling the $12,000 worth of tools inside the trailer to his home recently, but left it there Thursday night.
A surveillance camera on the property will be checked for images of the thief and the deputy dusted the trailer for fingerprints.
Bellew said he was relieved to get the tools back, but that the trailer is likely a total loss with its broken axle and other damage.
“I’m going to be mad later,” he said.
