Centerville man goes fishing, hits pole, catches DUI
A Centerville man almost had a tale to tell about the “one that got away” after a night of fishing.
Nathan Dewayne Ogletree’s Jeep struck a utility pole about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday on Houston Road near the entrance to Quail Ridge subdivision.
The impact jarred loose the contents of a power supply box near the top of the pole, which did not break.
Ogletree apparently was not seriously hurt.
Passers-by reported seeing the driver walking away from the crash, and Bibb County deputies searched the neighborhood and nearby fields until they found him.
“He had gotten all the way to Houston County,” one deputy said on the scene.
Ogletree initially denied being behind the wheel of the southbound 2004 Liberty, but he had a telltale cut on his nose and matched the description given by witnesses.
After being checked on the scene by paramedics, Ogletree, who said he’d been out all night fishing, was loaded into a patrol car as an officer began measuring a skid mark that veered across the northbound lane of traffic.
The 23-year-old was charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.
His fishing poles and gear were in the back of the Jeep, but no fish.
“He said he threw them all back,” a deputy said.
