Cops hunting suspect in Cochran slaying
The police on Saturday were still searching for a gunman who shot and killed a Cochran man Friday afternoon in a slaying that may have been prompted by an argument over an all-terrain vehicle.
Special agent Scott Whitley of the GBI’s Eastman office said the shooting happened about 2:30 p.m. on North Sixth Street just up from East Dykes Street, one of the town’s main thoroughfares.
Whitley said there were “multiple gunshots fired.”
The victim, 32-year-old Dante Ates, was pronounced dead at the Cochran hospital after someone drove him there, Whitley said.
The agent declined to say where on the body Ates was wounded or what kind of gun was used.
Further details were still being gathered on Saturday.
Whitley said a dispute over a possibly stolen ATV may have led to the gunfire, but he would not elaborate as the cause was not certain.
