A 14-year deputy with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office has been suspended after he was charged with DUI over the weekend.

Sgt. Thomas J. Hargrove, 33, was arrested by the Georgia State Patrol in downtown Milledgeville late Friday or early Saturday, said Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massee.

Hargrove was relieved of his duties pending the outcome of the investigation, Massee said.

The deputy was off duty and driving his personal vehicle when he was charged with DUI and failure to maintain a lane in what the sheriff called an "unfortunate event."

"Everybody's very fond of this young man," Massee said. "He's had some issues lately, and we hope that this is starting block and not a stumbling block."

Hargrove was taken to the Milledgeville jail and was later released on bond.
