Man shot in head in Milledgeville drive-by; woman shields kids from bullets

A Milledgeville gun battle Sunday night between two vehicles along Oconee Street wounded one man and sent a woman scrambling to cover her kids.

About 9 p.m., shots fired from a white Crown Victoria, possibly with rims on the vehicle, and a gold SUV hit a 20-year-old man in the head near Jefferson and Pritchard streets as he ran away from the gunshots, according to a news release from the Milledgeville Police Department.

The man was taken to Oconee Regional Medical Center, which alerted police.

The victim, whose identity and condition was not immediately released, was transferred to the Medical Center, Navicent Health in Macon for further treatment.

The gunshot grazed his head, and there was no substantial damage, police Maj. John Davis said in an email.

As officers were investigating a report of shots fired near Riverbend Apartments, a woman in a white Ford Fusion told investigators she was checking a mailbox on Pritchard Street when she heard what she thought was fireworks.

She saw a white Jeep, possibly a Cherokee, with people firing guns out of the vehicle and dove back into her car to cover up her children as the Fusion was hit by the passing gunfire. No one was injured in her car.

Police recovered several shell casings in the neighborhood and are asking anyone with information to call the Milledgeville Police tip line at 478-414-4413.
