After high-speed chase, Byron police charge two accused of drug trafficking
Two 32-year-old men were arrested in Byron and charged with trafficking drugs after leading police on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash Sunday.
Jkawme Harris, of Fort Valley, was driving Kenneth McCrary Jr., of Macon, southbound on Interstate 75 just after midnight when a Byron police officer, who suspected Harris may be under the influence, tried to pull over the car, according to a news release from the police department.
Harris exited onto Russell Parkway, and the officer saw the men throwing items from the car as it continued on to Housers Mill Road toward Ga. 96, according to the release. At one point, Harris stopped to let McCrary out of the car.
McCrary was arrested by Peach County sheriff's officers walking in the area where he was dropped off.
Harris kept driving, reaching speeds as high as 110 mph and eventually turning into the Vinings subdivision off Ga. 41, where he struck a tree in a vacant lot, according to the release. Harris fled on foot and was arrested shortly after the crash.
A search of the car revealed 10 pounds of marijuana, 3 ounces of suspected cocaine and a pistol, officials said.
Harris is charged with trafficking drugs, felony fleeing and attempting to elude, DUI drugs, reckless driving, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and speeding. McCrary is charged with trafficking drugs, giving a false name and date of birth, and obstruction of law enforcement.
