Student robbed at gunpoint headed to school in Macon

A 16-year-old student faced two men with guns early Wednesday as he headed to a school bus stop near Ell Street.

The teen was near the dead end of Goodwin Drive, on the back side of Ballard Hudson Middle School, when the gunmen took his money, phones and shoes, according to a release from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.

The victim's description of the suspects led deputies to two men on Ell Street, but one of them got away.

Deputies chased the other man, later identified as 19-year-old Michael Mitchell, of Warner Robins, the release said.

Officers tased Mitchell and arrested him off Anthony Road near the Interstate 75 overpass in Macon.

After EMTs examined Mitchell in an ambulance, a deputy drove him to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center about 8:15 a.m.

Officers recovered a gun and the victim's Nike shoes and some personal items.

The second gunman has been identified but remains at large. Neither the student's identity nor the school he attends were released.

With two armed men on the loose, Ballard-Hudson Middle School, at 1070 Anthony Road, was on precautionary lockdown until 8:30 a.m., said Stephanie Hartley, spokeswoman for the Bibb County school system.

"Administrators were on the bus ramp and got onto the buses telling students they had to go immediately into the school and not linger outside," Hartley said.

Extra police officers were at the middle school and stationed at Ingram-Pye Elementary at 855 Anthony Road, she said, which is just up the street from where the suspect was caught.

The second gunman was described as a black man who was wearing a red and black jacket over blue jeans. He was last seen headed to Anthony Road.
