Monroe County residents warned of phone scam

After receiving several complaints from the public, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a phone scam.

A heavily accented man is calling residents and telling them they currently have a criminal lawsuit against them, according to a Thursday night email from Sgt. Lawson Bittick. The man asks for people to call him at a phone number with a 202 area code, Bittick said.

"This is yet another scam," Bittick said. "And we ask you to pay attention to the details of the call before responding."
