GBI investigating Crawford traffic stop involving Roberta mayor's daughter

The GBI has launched an investigation of the circumstances surrounding a Crawford County traffic stop involving Roberta Mayor Becky Smith's daughter.

J.T. Ricketson, special agent in charge of the GBI's Perry field office, said Tuesday that agents will be investigating whether anyone obstructed law enforcement.

The investigation began after the GBI received a request from Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney David Cooke.

Ricketson said a video of the Oct. 25 traffic stop, on Hortman Mill Road in Knoxville, shows Smith and her husband arriving at the scene after 44-year-old Susan Jackqueline Mason, of Roberta, was pulled over.

Smith declined comment when reached by phone Tuesday afternoon.

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office declined The Telegraph's request for a copy of the video, citing the ongoing investigation in the case.

A Crawford County deputy was patrolling Hortman Mill Road when he spotted a white car "riding the center line" driving toward him, according to an incident report in the case.

The deputy later saw the car cross into the oncoming traffic lane, according to the report.

Mason was subsequently charged with failure to maintain a lane, driving without a valid license and disorderly conduct, according to the report.
