Witness told Bibb deputies that suspect in 14-year-old's slaying wanted revenge for shootings at his home
Terrance Hampton's father picked him up from work about 2 p.m. Dec. 13, just four hours before the 18-year-old is accused of fatally shooting a 14-year-old Macon girl inside her Lindwood Drive home.
At some point that day, the teen told someone he was tired of people "shooting his house up and he's going to get back," Bibb County sheriff's Investigator Allen Kendrick said during a commitment hearing Tuesday in Bibb County Magistrate Court.
Deputies responded to Ta'Shuntis "Tootie" Roberts' home about 6 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire.
The 14-year-old girl was found with multiple gunshot wounds, barely conscious in a back bedroom. She died later at the hospital.
Kendrick said the day after the shooting the same witness who told deputies about Hampton's plan to "get back" said Hampton also told him that he thought he'd shot the wrong person.
Hampton cooperated with authorities and answered questions at the detective bureau, but he wasn't initially arrested.
On Dec. 18, deputies served a search warrant at his home on Shearwater Drive and found ammunition in a bag, underneath a bed, that was similar to rounds recovered at the scene of the shooting, Kendrick said. Ballistic tests are pending.
Based on the witness statements and after finding the ammunition, authorities obtained a warrant for Hampton's arrest, Kendrick said.
A magistrate ruled enough probable cause exists for the prosecution in Hampton's case to move forward,
When asked by Hampton's attorney, Paul Christian, whether deputies are investigating the shootings at his client's home, Kendrick replied that those incidents also are under investigation.
He said Hampton's home was damaged by gunfire twice in 2015.
Kendrick said it's too early to say whether the shooting that resulted in Roberts' death was gang-related.
A senior Superior Court judge denied bond for Hampton last week.
He is being held at the Bibb County jail awaiting trial on one count of murder and five counts of aggravated assault. Four other people were inside the house with Roberts when shots were fired, striking Roberts.
At the time of the shooting, Hampton was out on bond for charges stemming from his alleged possession of a sawed-off shotgun and a forged gun carry permit from about a month before the shooting.
