The stench was so foul and the conditions so squalid that a Bibb County sheriff's deputy had to don a protective suit to retrieve one dead and eight malnourished chickens from a Bibb County mobile home Thursday night.

Outside the trailer at Lot 60, 5424 Houston Road, just south of Tobesofkee Creek near Ga. 247, authorities said they found 17 dead chickens in cages and seven more malnourished ones.

The trailer's owner, 59-year-old George William McGuire III, of Warner Robins, was jailed, charged with 18 counts of felony cruelty to animals along with 15 misdemeanor counts of the same crime.

McGuire was being held Friday at the Bibb County jail in lieu of $4,160 bail.

A sheriff's report didn't mention why the chickens hadn't been taken care of or how long they'd been neglected.

Sonja Adams, interim director of the Macon-Bibb County Animal Welfare Department, said Friday that McGuire had been staying in the trailer.

"He kind of has been living everywhere," she said.

Adams described the conditions in the mobile home as "horrid."

"It was really bad. It's hard to put into words exactly how bad it was amongst the smell of all the feces and urine from the chickens," she said, adding that officers also found human waste in adult diapers lying around.

Despite the squalor, Adams said it appeared from the looks of McGuire's Facebook page that he had been fond of the fowl.

"He loooved his chickens," she said. "They all had names. He dressed them up in clothes sometimes. He made clothes for them, gave them baths, let them watch TV with him. He would cook dinner for them while they watched."
