Scammers are trying to dupe Macon Water Authority commercial customers out of their cash.

The authority has received numerous reports of fake callers claiming customers' accounts are past due and that water will be disconnected in 30 minutes or more if payment is not made, according to a news release from the MWA.

Before service is cut off, the authority's protocol is to notify customers through an automated telephone message with detailed customer information in addition to sending bills detailing balances and past due amounts in payments.

Macon-Bibb 911 also has received calls about the scam, and the Bibb County Sheriff's Office is investigating.

Anyone receiving such a call is asked to report it to the authorities at 751-7500.
