GBI phone number used in telephone money scam
Scammers are using the GBI's main telephone number to try to dupe people out of money.
Georgians are warned not to fall for the scam that appears to be a legitimate phone call from the GBI at 404-244-2600, according to a news release from the GBI.
The number has been "spoofed," which means it shows up on caller I.D. as if it were a legitimate call.
The caller pretends to be from the GBI and tells people on the line that they are collecting a debt for the IRS or college and claims an arrest warrant will be issued if they don't pay up.
The GBI warns that no one should give personal information to the caller as the GBI does not collect money over the telephone.
