A Milledgeville police officer was nearly run over early Tuesday by a fleeing shooting suspect.

Just before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Officer Linc Boyer heard gunshots in the 100 block of West Mitchell Street, according to the police department’s Facebook page.

Boyer found two men who had been arguing, and one of them got in his car and drove off, nearly hitting Officer Brian English.

Other police officers chased the shooting suspect, who wrecked the car at West Walton and North Clarke streets.

The man, identified by The Union-Recorder newspaper as Leshawn Burnett, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, fleeing, attempting to elude and theft by receiving stolen property after officers recovered a stolen .45-caliber pistol from Burnett’s car.
