Bomb squad clears 18 pipe bombs from Monroe County home
A home in Monroe County held 18 pipe bombs, which were moved off-site by law enforcement Friday afternoon and into the evening.
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad, which handles all such cases in the area, worked with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to secure the scene at 324 Bunn Road, located southeast of downtown Forsyth.
“All that has been well taken care of,” said Monroe County’s Emergency Management Director Matt Perry. “Right now, there is no danger to the public.”
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 12:30 p.m. on Friday about the devices from the brother-in-law of 46-year-old Brian Kendall Mathews, who lives at the residence. Once there, officers discovered the pipe bombs and arrested Mathews shortly after 4 p.m.
Authorities have not determined a purpose for the devices. The investigation is still ongoing.
“We have no idea, but we plan to find out,” said Allison Selman-Willis, public information officer for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Traffic on Bunn Road was limited to residents only as agencies worked to clear the home.
