Jones County High’s band director resigns after allegation of ‘unprofessional’ relationship

Jones County High School’s band director has resigned amid reports that he had an inappropriate relationship with a student.

In a one-sentence letter to the school district last Thursday, the former band director wrote, “I, Corey Tanner, resign from my position from Jones County school system effective 9/3/15.”

Also on Sept. 3, Maj. Earl Humphries of the Jones County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the school district, where he met with Geneva Braziel, the assistant superintendent, to discuss the allegations of misconduct.

Braziel provided Humphries with “information and evidence” that Tanner was involved in an “unprofessional” relationship with a student, according to a Jones County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

“It’s an open investigation and we’re still working on it,” Humphries told The Telegraph on Wednesday.

The school district could not be reached for comment late Wednesday evening.

Mark Andrews, vice chairman of the Jones County school board, said he wasn’t aware of the specifics but expressed confidence in the Sheriff’s Office. “All I know is that he resigned and the sheriff’s department is handling that,” he said.
