Former Macon correctional officer accused of lying after hitting inmate: indictment
A former employee with the Georgia Department of Corrections in Macon was accused of falsely reporting an incident in which she hit an incarcerated man, according to court records from Monday.
Brittany Latrese Renee Currin is accused of violating her oath as a public officer, making false statements in government matters and striking an incarcerated man on May 17, 2025, according to her indictment.
She initially claimed that the incarcerated man “got startled (and caused) him to jerk upward and hit my hand, causing his head to fall forward and hit the table,” according to the indictment.
However, prosecutors said in the indictment that she had “purposely struck (the victim) in the head with her hand.”
It is unclear as of Tuesday which prison she worked at in Macon. The Department of Corrections has not responded to requests for comment prior to publication.
What penalties does she face?
Currin faces between one and five years of prison time if she’s convicted of violating her oath as a public officer. She will also face between one and five years in prison, as well as a $1,000 fine, if she’s convicted of making false statements in government matters. If she’s convicted of simple battery, she’ll face a fine of less than $1,000, jail time or probation.
