One man is in custody and a woman is in critical condition after a shooting at a Mercer University Drive gas station Sunday afternoon.

Around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Bibb County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a woman with a gunshot wound at Circle K, 3391 Mercer University Drive, according to a news release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman was reportedly involved in a verbal altercation with a man before she was shot in the Circle K parking lot, the news release said. After she was shot, the woman got up and ran toward Mercer University Drive but was hit by a car.

She was taken to a local hospital for treatment and as of Sunday evening was in critical condition, the news release said.

As authorities investigated the shooting, they identified a suspect who left the scene in a silver Buick Enclave, according to the news release.

At 7:35 p.m., sheriff’s deputies found a car matching the suspect’s vehicle at Marathon Gas, 5013 Harrison Road. Deputies attempted to approach the vehicle, but the suspect took out a firearm and fled the scene. Deputies chased the suspect’s vehicle and stopped it on Harrison Road near Chambers Road, the news release said.

The suspect refused to leave the car and fired shots while inside. Several Bibb County sheriff’s teams came to the scene to assist and eventually took the man into custody around 9 p.m., the release said.

Deputies arrested Delmar Tavaris Eugene Black, 35, and recovered a firearm. Black’s charges were not provided in the news release.

The sheriff’s office told The Telegraph Monday morning an update in the case would be provided soon.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 or Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
