A man charged with strangling and hitting his former partner over the course of several hours in 2022 was sentenced to prison Friday.

Anthony Dwayne Boyer, 50, of Warner Robins, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery on Monday, ahead of jury selection in his trial, Houston County District Attorney Eric Edwards said in a news release Friday.

The case involved an incident on July 11, 2022. Law enforcement officers visited a woman at the Houston Medical Center, now Emory Warner Robins, to investigate the cause of her injuries, the news release said.

The woman said Boyer had strangled her at his home for several hours and also hit her face. Law enforcement observed scratches, abrasions and bruises on her body and a neck wound “consistent with having been strangled,” the news release said.

“Strangulation is one of the most dangerous forms of domestic violence we encounter,” Edwards said in the release. “A victim can survive the immediate attack and still suffer serious internal injuries, permanent medical complications, or even death hours or days later.

“Unfortunately, family violence often takes place behind closed doors and escalates over time. What may begin as controlling or abusive behavior can quickly develop into life-threatening violence.”

Boyer was sentenced to 10 years in prison, followed by 10 years of probation, the news release said.

“The sentence imposed reflects the seriousness of this defendant’s conduct and sends a clear message that those who commit acts of domestic violence in our community will be held accountable,” Edwards said.
