A man died days after he allegedly got in a fight with another detainee at the Crawford County Jail, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.

In a March 27 news release, deputies described their account of what reportedly preceded the death of William Stinson, “in the interest of transparency,” the release said. Stinson was a detainee who reported medical issues in the days before his death on Feb. 23.

Stinson was booked into the Crawford County Jail on a probation violation charge Nov. 8, 2025, the release said.

“He reported no current injuries, symptoms, or complaints,” deputies said.

The 55-year-old then reported dental issues on Feb. 11.

Two days later, he reportedly “instigated a fight in the jail” and “admitted in a recorded interview with jail personnel that he threw the first punch,” the sheriff’s office said.

Jail staff called an ambulance because Stinson reported head injuries and “headaches from the fight,” deputies said. Ambulance workers treated him that day.

On Feb. 16, medical staff at the jail treated Stinson for “complaints of vision, blood coming from his ears and knots on or near his ears,” the news release said.

Two days later, Stinson threw up blood in the jail so he was released on probation and taken to a Peach County hospital. He was hospitalized there until Feb. 21, when he was transferred to a Macon hospital.

He checked himself out of the hospital later that day and went home, the release said.

His mother found him “unresponsive” at the home on Feb. 23.

The cause of his death was unclear.
