A man will serve 10 years in for a 2022 shooting death in Macon, according to court records .

Adolphus Dewayne Hughes Jr., 25, was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation. His case stems from the homicide of Jimmy Scott III in July 2022, court records showed. He also assaulted another man “ with intent to murder by shooting him with a firearm,” according to court records.

Hughes pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault, in exchange for the dismissal of his murder and firearm possession charges.

Unidentified co-conspirator

Deputies were dispatched to 856 Pio Nono Ave on July 29, 2022, where they found two victims lying on the ground with gunshot wounds. Jimmy Scott had a gunshot wound to the head, while a second man had a gunshot wound to the side, court records showed.

Witnesses saw Hughes “come from around the corner and begin shooting the victims,” Assistant District Attorney Jeremy Johnson said during a bond hearing on Nov. 18, 2024.

“He ran between two businesses and started shooting at the victims and striking them before running off again,” the prosecutor said. “In addition to witnesses seeing him on the scene, your honor, he was also seen on video driving a vehicle to and from the incident, and he also had an unidentified co-conspirator with him … throughout this incident (as) well.”

The co-conspirator was not identified in court records.

The victim’s family repeatedly received threats from and was intimidated by members of Hughes’ gang, court records said.

On one occasion, the victim’s niece deactivated her social media accounts and withdrew from school in fear of being attacked, Johnson said.

Jimmy Scott’s sister, Tiffany Scott, said in the bond hearing that the two men were “just standing outside of the shop, which my brother owned, trying to make change in the community,” according to court records.

“He wasn’t perfect, but he was making a change, giving free haircuts, doing free cookouts, stuff like that,” Tiffany Scott said. “They (weren’t) bothering anybody.”

In the hearing, Hughes attempted to cast doubt on the security footage and said he didn’t kill anyone.

“(Johnson) said they got my face on a camera … killing somebody,” Hughes said. “(I’ve) seen the camera footage .. the only thing they got me doing is getting in my car … I didn’t do nothing. I didn’t kill nobody.”
