Macon jurors find Sandersville man not guilty in baby's death
A Sandersville man was acquitted of murder and child cruelty charges Thursday, court records show.
Macon jurors found Jamarius Khalil Dixon not guilty of one count of malice murder, one count of felony murder and one count of cruelty to children, according to court records . He was charged in 1-year-old Jayce Gibson’s death .
Deputies were dispatched to Coliseum Northside Hospital for an unresponsive infant on Feb. 24, 2021. They were told the baby was taken to the hospital “by his mother and her roommate/boyfriend after noticing the infant became unresponsive,” according to a news release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office on March 3, 2021.
An autopsy report was conducted, which revealed that “Jayce did not die of natural causes; he suffered head trauma,” the news release said.
The sheriff’s office received information that led to Dixon’s arrest on March 3, 2021. It is unclear what information the sheriff’s office obtained. He remained in jail until his acquittal Thursday, according to court records.
Prosecutors and law enforcement said Dixon was responsible for the death due to “text messages early in the relationship that indicated he wasn’t happy being in a relationship” with the mother of the child, Kimari King, Dixon’s attorney, told The Telegraph Friday.
Prosecutors had claimed the text messages were a motive for killing the baby, and that Dixon had the means and the opportunity.
King said the jurors, in the end, found that the “theory was not what (prosecutors) thought it was.”
“I truly believe my client was innocent,” King said. “I’m excited that he has his life back.
“I’m not happy that it takes five years in Bibb County to get to trial.”
