Suspect in shooting near Fulton County elementary school captured in Middle Georgia
The suspect in a deadly shooting near a Fulton County elementary school Tuesday was arrested by Houston County officials, according to a Facebook post and media outlets.
Christopher Ates, 39, was booked into the Houston County Jail on reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and cruelty to children in the second degree, according to jail logs.
Law enforcement agencies in Fulton and Houston counties said Ates is connected to a shooting death that occurred Tuesday in front of Palmetto Elementary School, according to multiple media outlets.
Eboni Anderson, 34, died in the shooting, outlets reported.
Ates was arrested after a chase through Middle Georgia ended in Twiggs County, according to multiple media outlets. It began in the area of Russell Parkway and Highway 41, where officers noticed that a car matched a be-on-the-lookout advisory from Fulton County officials, according to Mandy Stella, the Warner Robins city clerk.
The sheriff’s office took over the pursuit, Stella said. The chase stopped in Twiggs County, and Ates left his car behind and ran toward the woods. Law enforcement found a baby in the car, according to multiple media outlets.
Palmetto Mayor Teresa Thomas-Smith said in a Facebook post Tuesday “no Palmetto Elementary School students are involved, and all students and staff are safe.”
Classes resumed as normal on Wednesday.
