A mother was killed and her 2-year-old daughter was injured in a shooting Tuesday night in Macon, according to the Bibb County sheriff’s and coroner’s offices.

A shooting happened before 8:30 p.m. outside a house in the 300 block of Fulton Street off Gray Highway in east Macon, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Deputies responded to a 911 call regarding “a person down” and found Ayana Smith, 28, and her baby with gunshot wounds.

Paramedics took them to a hospital, where Smith was pronounced dead around 9:30 p.m., and the baby was in stable condition, Jones said.

Smith’s family was notified of her death, Jones told The Telegraph.

It was not immediately clear whether a suspect had been identified or arrested.

Deputies urged anyone with information to call the sheriff’s office at 478-751-7500, or Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
