Man dies in Bibb County Jail, coroner confirms. Investigation underway
A man died in the Bibb County Jail Friday night, according to the Bibb County coroner’s and sheriff’s offices.
Corrections deputies found a detainee “unconscious” before 6 p.m., Coroner Leon Jones said. He was “unresponsive inside his cell,” the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
A deputy performed CPR and took “life-saving measures” until emergency medical services arrived, Jones and the sheriff’s office said.
Jones said he pronounced the man dead about 15 minutes after he was found unconscious.
His identity was not released because his family was not yet notified of his death, deputies and Jones said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will perform an autopsy on his body “due to this being an in-custody death,” deputies said.
The sheriff’s office’s internal affairs investigators of professional standards were investigating the death, deputies said in the news release.
This is a developing story.
