A man was severely injured in a shooting Friday about a mile away from Mercer University in Macon, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

A 38-year-old man was shot Friday morning in the 200 block of Pansy Avenue, deputies said in a news release. A 911 call reported the shooting before noon in a neighborhood off Montpelier Avenue, which runs through the Mercer campus, about 1 mile east.

An ambulance took the victim to a local medical facility where medical staff said he was in “critical condition,” the sheriff’s office said.

Keisha Jones, a relative of the 38-year-old, told The Telegraph she heard from medical staff that “he’s breathing on his own ... it’s good.” Jones and other loved ones gathered around the scene as deputies investigated.

The shooting allegedly happened outside of a pink house on Pansy Street, between Blue Bell and Camellia Street, according to Deputy John Kile and Sgt. Christopher Williams, who were at the scene.

The house’s yard was surrounded by crime scene tape around 1:30 p.m., and deputies with the sheriff’s office’s Criminal Investigation Division were photographing areas of the side and front of the house.

Nobody was arrested by 1:45 p.m. and the incident was under investigation, Kile said.

Shootings are uncommon in this neighborhood, according to Jones. Williams, a public information officer for the BCSO, agreed and said he hasn’t responded to many violent severe injuries there in 2025.

“I haven’t been on Pansy (Avenue) for a while,” Williams said. “As far as aggravated assaults, homicides, I don’t remember a whole lot this year ... on that street.”

No other details were immediately provided by deputies. Anyone with tips was urged to call the sheriff’s office at 478-751-7500, or Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.

Another person was shot in Macon just two days prior when 18-year-old De’Kerrio Jamontez Cobb was killed at a gas station on the city’s east side.
